SSL Meeting Tuesday, May 4th, 2004 For Thursday: Notes - Carl Snacks - Sam (remember, we will be going to Takara afterwards) ************************* Should we meet next week (during finals week)? We are having a little bit of trouble deciding on a time, so please email either Jim Propp or the SSL list with what times would be good for you. IMPORTANT: By June 1st, Jim wants all of us to email him with a description of what we've done and any further thoughts on the SSL experience in general. For Thursday, come prepared to talk about any acknowledgements or references you would like to add to the papers. Hal would like us all to test-drive his Java applets, he will send along the URLs in emails to the list. For the Newton folks, in the interest of time, we should perhaps jettison the interpolating polynomial write-up for the noncommuting variable case. Hopefully we will be able to add this before the deadline of the end of May. Also, as a possible addendum to the Newton paper, we have some identities involving Fibonacci numbers and Pascal's triangle as well as some binomial coefficient identities like Sum[ (-1)^t Binomial[ k - t, t] Binomial[ k -2t, m - t], {t, 0, k/2} ] = 1 for all k>= m >= 0. There was some discussion of how we should define the binomial coefficients for something like Binomial[ 3, -1 ] and whether this was equal to zero like Binomial[ 3, 4 ]. Jim has emailed the domino mailing list with this question.
